Living in Maryland, BGE customers are probably familiar with hot and humid summers. This year in particular, it felt like we skipped over spring and went right into consecutive days of 90-plus degree weather – meaning nearly nonstop use of our air conditioning systems.
With A/C units running constantly, it’s important for customers to make sure that their systems are not only working, but that they are operating reliably, safely and efficiently. A properly working air conditioning system can be the difference between a cool, comfortable household and one that is literally unbearable.
Similar to how keeping your automobile in top shape can extend its life and improve performance, regular maintenance on your central air conditioner can also lead to a longer lifespan and increased efficiency. One of the simplest ways to help ensure your system is in proper working condition is by changing its air filter monthly. Dirty filters can impede the air flow and cause your system to work much harder than necessary, which can increase your energy usage and ultimately cost you more money. Some systems may require inspections, repairs or perhaps even
replacement. To help keep your system operating at peak performance, BGE’s residential
Cooling Efficiency Improvement Program offers a $100 rebate toward HVAC service through one of our participating contractors.
While everyone looks to their air conditioning unit to produce and circulate cool air, understand that the coldness of the airflow does not always mean a system is fit for operation. Some older units may operate very inefficiently – costing you more money in the long-run than if you were to replace with a more efficient
ENERGY STAR® certified model. Occasionally, older units may not be compatible with newer technologies such as programmable thermostats or outdoor switches like those offered through our money and energy-saving
PeakRewards program. During cycling events, some customers with older or unmaintained HVAC systems may not recover as fast from a cycling interruption. Poorly operating systems, such as those with insufficient refrigerant can reduce cooling once cycling has ended and shut off completely at the breaker, which can make your summer or PeakRewards experience less pleasing. If you decide to upgrade to a new A/C system make sure you choose an ENERGY STAR certified model and you can save
up to $500 with a rebate from the
BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®.
BGE knows that, while customers are always interested in saving money on their bills, it’s still important to be comfortable. Hopefully, the
information we’re sharing will help you get the most out of your system and keep you cool and content for years to come.
