Summary ―The summary section (top left of the bill) contains information about the following:

  • The date the bill was sent
  • The last payment received
  • The prior balance (if any)
  • The total current charges, including:
    • Gas
    • Electric
    • Other- (i.e., service contract)
  • This section also provides information about any supplier, other than BGE, that you are using for gas and/or electric

Energy Use (top right of the bill) includes the following information:

  • Date of next scheduled meter reading
  • Your gas and/or electric energy use profile broken down by past month, previous month and one year ago,
    • Number of days covered by bill
    • Total and average energy consumption
    • Average monthly temperature – 24 hour period
    • Number of hours below freezing (winter) or above 85 degrees (summer)

Bill Messages (bottom left of the bill) may include the following:

  • Generic and special messages (e.g., information about what to do if you move; who to call if you have questions about merchandise purchases, etc.)
  • Includes information to compare BGE electric supply prices (SOS) with competitive suppliers

Electric Details (back page, top left of the bill) includes information about the following:

  • Whether your account is residential or commercial
  • The Electric Choice ID.  When choosing an electric supplier, customers should refer to the Electric Choice ID number.
  • The billing period date range
  • The last meter read date and the meter number
  • Customer charges
    • Cost to provide, install and maintain electric meter
    • Cost to read meter
    • Billing and administrative
    • Electric distribution charge – the cost to deliver electricity to your home (BGE delivers electricity to you, regardless of your supplier
    • Cost to construct and maintain poles, transformers, wires
  • EmPower Md. Charge – the cost to develop and deliver energy efficiency programs in support of a state-wide initiative to reduce electric consumption and demand 15 percent by 2015. (e.g. The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®)
  • RGGI Rate Credit – Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative: A credit provided by the State of Maryland to support clean energy programs.
  • Electric supplier charges, if applicable
  • RSP Chg/Misc Credit relates to the 2006 Rate Stabilization Plan. The RSP Charge is the repayment of deferral credits provided to help customers transition to market rates. Important facts about the 2006 RSP charge include: 

    The repayment period began July 2007 and will continue for approximately 10 years. All of BGE's residential electric customers must pay the RSP Charge on each unit of electricity consumed during the recovery period.

    The actual RSP Charge is shown in the note below. The differences between the RSP Charge and the Miscellaneous Credits are:  
    • Financing Credit represents the certain customer benefits resulting from BGE's method of financing the deferral.
    • Nuclear Decommissioning is a continuation of the Credit previously shown as the Electric Rate Credit on the front of the bill, which was required by Senate Bill 1.
  • Dmd Res Chg/Cr - Demand Resource Surcharge: A surcharge that allows BGE to apply the costs or benefits resulting from a PSC Order that requires utilities to enter into contracts with demand resource providers for the June 1, 2011 through May 31, 2016 power planning years, with a two-year extension provision (June 1, 2016 - May 31, 2018), to help reduce energy demand in peak times such as on extremely hot days.

  • Whether your account is residential or commercial
  • The Gas Choice ID.  When choosing a gas supplier, customers should refer to the Gas Choice ID number.
  • The billing period date range
  • The last meter read date, meter number
  • Customer charge
    • Cost to provide, install and maintain gas meter
    • Cost to read meter
    • Billing and administrative costs
    • Gas distribution charge – the cost to deliver gas to your home (BGE delivers gas to you, regardless of your supplier
    • Cost to construct and maintain gas pipelines and related equipment
  • STRIDE Charge – Monthly charge to BGE gas customers for BGE’s Strategic Infrastructure Development and Enhancement plan, which was implemented in compliance with Maryland law and with the approval of the Maryland Public Service Commission. It is designed to accelerate the modernization of BGE’s natural gas distribution system in order to enhance system safety and reliability.
  • EmPower Md. Charge – the cost to develop and deliver energy efficiency programs in support of a state-wide initiative to reduce electric consumption and demand 15 percent by 2015. (e.g. The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®)
  • Other charges, if applicable
