How to Choose and Switch

Choosing a supplier is easy, and it can save you money if you find a supplier and plan that’s right for you.  Here is a simple checklist you can use to help make the process easier:

  1. Shop. Shopping couldn't be easier. BGE provides a complete list of approved suppliers on this website.
  2. Contact Suppliers. Ask them about two things: the length of the contract, and the price you'll be paying. You can use the "Price to Compare" on your bill to compare prices. Be sure to research suppliers and their programs and billing options carefully.
  3. Compare. Compare rates, "green" offerings, etc. and make sure you're comfortable with the length of the contract.
  4. Decide. At this point, you should have the information you need and the decision should be easy. Once you decide, all you need to do is contact that supplier with your Electric and Gas Choice ID Numbers (located on the back on your BGE bill) and authorize them to be your gas/electricity supplier. Before signing a contract with a new supplier, be sure the company is licensed by the Maryland PSC and registered by BGE.
  5. Relax. Once you notify the new supplier, they will take it from there, including notifying BGE about the change.
  6. Remember. No matter who you purchase your gas and/or electricity supply from, BGE will deliver the natural gas or electricity to your home, organization or business through BGE's pipes and wires. This delivery service is still regulated by the Maryland PSC. And because competition only affects the supply of natural gas and electricity and not the delivery, all distribution pipelines and power lines will continue to be maintained by BGE. So you will still call us to handle emergencies and to restore power during outages.

Note to business customers:
Business customers with annual natural gas use greater than 12,000 dekatherms should contact their BGE account executive for information about the Daily Metered Program.

Want to change again?
If, after using the services of one supplier, you decide to switch to another, check the terms of the agreement with your existing supplier, as well as the agreement with the new supplier. Then, contact the new supplier to initiate enrollment.

If you choose to cancel supply service with a supplier, the supplier will process your cancellation request for gas service to meet the utility's next available cancellation cycle. For electricity service, the request will be processed within two business days after receipt of the cancellation request.

Moving / Name change?

Please note that any updates you make to your BGE account, such as a name or address change, should also be updated with any third parties whose charges appear on your bill.  For example, if you have a contract with an energy supplier other than BGE, please contact that supplier directly to provide your updated information and determine if there is any change to your account status.  You can find your supplier’s contact information on your BGE bill.
