BGE has received the following Forestry Awards:
Wildlife Habitat Council's (WHC) Wildlife at Work certification – In 2008, BGE earned the Wildlife Habitat Council's (WHC) Wildlife at Work certification for the successful implementation of a comprehensive wildlife habitat management program at its 72-acre Spring Gardens natural gas operations facility in Baltimore City. This prestigious distinction was awarded to BGE's program as a result of its demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term wildlife habitat enhancement efforts.
Tree Line USA – BGE is a three-time recipient of this national award sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. To receive this award, the public or private utility must demonstrate practices that protect and enhance America's urban forests. The criteria that must be met include:
- Quality Tree Care
- Annual Worker Training
- Tree Planting
- Public Education
Maryland PLANT Award - BGE is a nine-time recipient of this state award sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the State Forest Conservancy District Board, and the Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee. BGE received the highest of the four levels of this award - the Green Award - which recognizes communities and organizations for their tree planting and tree care efforts, as well as for organized and fully functional programs that are funded and have full-time technical assistance.
Educational Excellence Award - In 2006, the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce recognized BGE's Forestry Unit for its participation in educating the students at North Glen Elementary School. The Forestry staff assisted in writing a grant application and coordinating the planting of 216 native trees and shrubs on the school grounds. The staff also provided the students with information on how to plant trees and shrubs; the benefits of trees to our environment and the Chesapeake Bay; and the importance of selecting low-growing trees to plant under or near power lines.
2005 Green Star Award - The Mayor and City of Annapolis presented the Outstanding Business Award for Environmental Excellence to BGE for its contribution toward planting hundreds of trees along the Naval Academy Stadium trail and in Truxton Park. The mayor and city also acknowledged BGE’s educational effort that provided an informative storyboard about planting the "Right Tree - Right Place" along Poplar Trail.
Business Volunteer Award - The City of Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department recognized BGE for its help in the Greenscape Program. BGE has been involved in the program since 2004. BGE’s staff and its tree trimming contractors have helped the city provide plants for area communities. The Greenscape Program provides trees, shrubs and flowers to Annapolis communities.
"Adopt-a-Park" Award - Harford County Parks and Recreation Department recognized BGE for adopting Flying Point Park. Since 2003, BGE volunteers have planted and maintained more than 100 trees and shrubs in the park, which is partly owned by BGE.
