BGE Heads Back to School for Earth DayProvides students, parents and teachers a lesson in energy safety and energy efficiency
April 2011 -- As part of our ongoing Educational Outreach Initiatives, BGE joined St. Andrew's United Methodist Church and Day School in Anne Arundel County during its day-long recognition of Earth Day. Several teachers and community volunteers came out to help hundreds of students plant flower gardens, learn about the eco-system, understand the importance of having a healthier planet and accept the shared responsibility to improve the environment for themselves, their families and community.
Darlene Elkins – Community Relations Specialist, Joe Finzel – Supervisor at Arlington Training Center, and three linemen trainees (Brian Hauf, Mark Keifer, and Scott Willis) delivered an engaging, interactive and informative presentation on energy efficiency and energy safety to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, their teachers and a number of parents. The presentation included a video on how electricity gets from the power plant to the home; how to conserve energy in the home; safety; and, a “hands on” demonstration of the company’s bucket truck and what linemen wear on the job.
“BGE helps customers learn to save energy, save money and improve the environment by providing educational literature and online information,” said Elkins. “But having an actual presence in the community builds relationships and enables customers retain our information longer.”
Aside from Earth Day, BGE regular visits schools and community organizations to provide information to customers on safety and energy management.
“Our commitment to educate customers is a priority. We look forward to opportunities to engage youth and their parents on safety and energy conservation in hopes of helping build environmentally-conscious citizens and communities.”
