Electric utilities have been around for more than 100 years. Their systems are designed to deliver power to all customers in a safe, reliable and economical way.
Lights, motors and heaters, the original loads, use over 90% of the electric power today. Electronics and electronic controlled systems account for the rest, and they are rapidly expanding.
Welcome to the New World of the 'Digital Society.'
Today, electronics are everywhere, in homes, cars, and at work. It is a fact of life that electronics are more sensitive to electricity fluctuations than the original loads. A fraction of a second 'power blip' was barely noticeable to a classic load. Today, the same 'power blip' can shut down computer-based systems, wipe out critical data and severely impact the bottom line.
BGE recognized these new emerging technological changes and responded by creating a dedicated Power Quality and Reliability (PQ&R) team. Its mission is to guide customers on specific measures to protect critical equipment.
