But BGE's environmental stewardship measures don't stop there - They are magnified on a broader level in all that we do. BGE and our parent company, Constellation Energy, participate in WasteWise, a voluntary federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program which promotes waste recycling and pollution prevention. The company saves money on energy and disposal costs while saving tons of materials from taking up precious landfill space. Constellation Energy received the WasteWise award from EPA for implementing a comprehensive waste-prevention and recycling program that resulted in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Constellation was also named a "WasteWise Program Champion", one of only 14 organizations nationwide to earn that distinction, and also earned an honorable mention in the large-business category for its recycling efforts.
BGE Expands Company wide Recycling Program
Because BGE believes that proper care of the environment is an essential part of doing business, the company has been recycling various materials for many years. BGE recently expanded its scope and become even more "green".
BGE recently put programs in place to recycle paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and cardboard at all office complexes, service centers and training facilities. Other materials currently recycled at BGE include metals (aluminum, copper, brass, steel); paper, vehicle tires and batteries; electronics (e.g., computers); used oil, glycol, Freon; porcelain; wood; streetlights and fluorescent tubes; aerosol cans; rechargeable batteries; and electrical equipment (e.g., transformers). The company is currently evaluating other recycling opportunities, including energy saver switches, gas system condensates, and various plastics (e.g., natural gas piping).
"BGE participates in recycling not just for business reasons, but because it is the right thing to do for the environment." said Dan Norden, director of the Environmental Programs Unit. "We want BGE to continue to be a recognized leader in this country's recycling efforts."
