Awards

BGE has received the following Forestry Awards for 2005 and 2006:

Tree Line USA Tree Line USA - Three time recipient of this national award sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. To receive this award, the public or private utility must demonstrate practices that protect and enhance America's urban forests. The criteria that must be met include:

  • Quality Tree Care
  • Annual Worker Training
  • Tree Planting
  • Public Education

Maryland PLANT Award Maryland PLANT Award - Three time recipient of this state award sponsored by the MD Department of Natural Resources, the State Forest Conservancy District Board, and the MD Urban and Community Forest Committee. BGE received the highest of the 4 levels of this award - the Green Award, which recognizes communities and organizations for their tree planting and tree care efforts and organized, fully functional programs which are funded and have full-time technical assistance.

2006 Educational Excellence Award 2006 Educational Excellence Award - In April, 2006, the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce recognized BGE's Forestry Unit for its participation in educating the students at North Glen Elementary School. The Forestry staff assisted in writing a grant application and coordinating the planting of 216 native trees and shrubs on the school grounds. The staff also provided the students with information on how to plant trees and shrubs; the benefits of trees to our environment and the Chesapeake Bay; and the importance of selecting low-growing trees to plant under or near power lines.

2005 Green Star Award 2005 Green Star Award - The Mayor and City of Annapolis presented this Outstanding Business Award for Environmental Excellence to BGE. BGE contributed funds to plant hundreds of trees along the Naval Academy Stadium trail and Truxton Park. They also acknowledged the educational effort of BGE to provide an informative storyboard about planting the "Right Tree - Right Place" along Poplar Trail.

Business Volunteer Award Business Volunteer Award - The City of Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department recognized BGE for their assistance in the Greenscape Program, since 2004. BGE staff and their tree trimming contractors have helped the city sort plants for the different communities in Annapolis to pick up the next day. The Greenscape Program helps to provide more trees, shrubs, and flowers to the communities in Annapolis.

Adopt a Park Award "Adopt-a-Park" Award - Harford County Parks and Recreation Department recognized BGE for adopting Flying Point Park. Since 2003, BGE volunteers have planted and maintained over one hundred trees and shrubs in this park, which is partly owned by BGE.
