Why do I need to complete a Commercial and Industrial Application if I want a separate meter for my barn, garage or other "outbuilding?"
If you are requesting a separate meter for an "outbuilding" such as a barn or garage you will be responsible for extension charges (construction charges) as well as applicable monthly customer, demand and energy charges. These charges are described in BGE's Gas and Electric Service Tariffs. The tariffs, which are approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission, define residential service as service to a dwelling and are covered under "Schedule R" of BGE's Electric Service Tariff, and "Schedule D" of the Gas Service Tariff. Barns, garages, and other "outbuildings" on a residential property are, generally, not dwellings. Consequently, such buildings are typically covered under "Schedule G" of the Electric Service Tariff, and "Schedule C" of the Gas Service Tariff, and are subject to commercial extension charges.
In addition, your local jurisdiction may have zoning requirements concerning the installation of meters on these types of buildings. Please consult your local jurisdiction for any zoning regulations that may affect your project.
If I want electric service to my garage or barn, am I required to install separate BGE meters?
Not necessarily. You are permitted to use the existing residential service to supply the service to your "outbuilding" provided you meet the terms set forth in BGE's Electric Service Tariff and conform to any and all federal and local electric codes. Your BGE representative, in conjunction with your licensed electrician, can help you determine if this option is feasible for you.
