Alternative Fuel Vehicles
Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) refer to vehicles that run on fuels other than traditional petroleum based fuels like gasoline and diesel.

Benefits of AFVs
Alternative fuels reduce our dependence on petroleum and often produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel. Some fuels are produced domestically, reducing our dependence on imported oil, and some are derived from renewable sources. Other benefits include:

  1. Improve air quality
  2. Reduce emissions of greenhouse gases
  3. Reduce dependence on foreign oil
  4. Many positive economic impacts, particularly with alternative fuels derived from domestic resources.

BGE's AFVs
BGE is phasing in alternative passenger vehicles and bucket trucks. We are also supplementing our diesel fleet of 600 vehicles with biodiesel B20 (20% soybean oil).

Biodiesel burns much cleaner than petroleum-based diesel.  And it is produced in the U.S. from renewable resources such as soy beans.

carAdditionally, BGE has added several plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) to its fleet to test their performance in everyday use, educate customers on alternative fuel vehicles and support our commitment to “green energy” technology.
