Working Near Overhead and Underground Lines

Working Near Overhead and Underground Lines

Close
BGE operates and maintains thousands of miles of overhead and underground electric lines and buried natural gas pipes.  If you are working in central Maryland, you should always assume you will be in close proximity to our electric and gas systems, as well as equipment operated by other utilities. It is critical that you operate with extreme caution and follow all applicable laws to avoid causing injuries, costly equipment damage and lengthy service interruptions.

Overhead Line Safety
If you or your equipment will be working within 10 feet of overhead lines, the law requires that you MUST contact BGE at 800.685.0123 prior to the start of any work. Read more about overhead line safety.

Underground Line Safety
If you plan to dig anywhere, you need to know what is below. Maryland has a strict Miss Utility law that you must follow. Read more about the 811 one call system. Once you know the location of underground lines, you will also want to know how to dig safely and prudently. Check out BGE’s Dig Smart videos and training.
