BGE Smart Energy Rewards® is a voluntary program that helps you earn credits on your summer electricity bills. All BGE customers with a smart meter—regardless of your choice of electricity supplier—are eligible to participate in the program. There’s no need to enroll and no obligation.
BGE expects to call 5 – 10 Energy Savings Days each summer. On rare occasions, when there is an immediate need to reduce electric demand, you may be notified once the Energy Savings Day has started, not the day before.
Customers should exercise discretion and consider health impacts when reducing electricity. This program supports the EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act.
You can participate in BGE Smart Energy Rewards regardless of your choice of electricity supplier. If you choose not to reduce your electric usage, or are unable to lower your usage on an Energy Savings Day, you will lose nothing. The power to save is yours! Read Energy Savings Day tips
Why BGE created this program
The BGE Smart Energy Rewards program was designed to encourage customers to use less electricity during summer peak hours when energy demand is high. Managing summer peak demand helps to reduce the need for additional power generation plants, helps to keep down the overall cost of electricity, and eases the burden on Maryland's electricity delivery system as our state's population continues to grow.
Your BGE Smart Energy Rewards credits will vary depending on the amount of electricity you reduce during an Energy Savings Day. You can earn a bill credit of $1.25 for every kilowatt-hour saved compared to your typical usage on days with similar weather. To learn what your typical electricity usage is, log into your BGE.com online account
and click “My Energy Use”. Learn more
Your credit will appear as “Smart Energy Rewards” on your summer BGE bills (June-September), depending on when each Energy Savings Day occurs. If you are a PeakRewards customer, your credit will appear as “Smart Energy Rewards/PeakRewards” on your summer BGE bills (June-September). Customers who participated in the BGE Smart Energy Rewards program in summer 2013 saved, on average, about $10* per Energy Savings Day.
If you are a PeakRewards participant, you are guaranteed to receive at least your monthly PeakRewards credit. If you also participate in BGE Smart Energy Rewards and take additional steps to reduce your electricity usage on Energy Savings Days, you could earn bill credits of $1.25 for every kilowatt-hour saved compared to your typical usage. If your Smart Energy Rewards credit is higher than your PeakRewards credit, you will earn the greater of the two.
