BALTIMORE (April 17, 2019) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have presented BGE with its ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year— Sustained Excellence Award. This is BGE's 9th ENERGY Star Partner of the Year award, which again recognizes the success of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®, the company's suite of energy efficiency programs that aims to help customers reduce energy usage.
The highest honor among ENERGY STAR Awards is the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award. The Sustained Excellence classification recognizes organizations that have received the Partner of the Year award more than three times and continue to surpass previous energy efficiency achievements. Since the inception of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® in 2009, the company's highly successful suite of energy efficiency programs has received a total of fifteen ENERGY STAR awards.
BGE, along with sister Exelon utilities ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO, and Pepco, were honored for their continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency achievements at EPA's awards ceremony held in the District of Columbia last week.
"This award highlights the prudent energy choices our customers are making, and we are pleased to accept this award on their behalf," said Laurie Duhan, manager of energy efficiency portfolio for BGE. "We are honored to be recognized by the EPA and DOE for the ninth year in a row for BGE's programs that continue to provide customers with the ability to manage their energy use more efficiently."
"I applaud BGE's 2019 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award," said EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation Bill Wehrum. "The company's innovation and leadership enhance America's economic competitiveness. Reducing costly energy waste improves air quality and public health while protecting the environment."
The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® is one of the many ways BGE is moving smart energy forward and features a comprehensive portfolio of energy efficiency programs, intended to help customers reduce energy usage and demand in support of EmPOWER Maryland. EmPOWER Maryland programs are funded by a charge on customers' energy bill. EmPOWER programs can help customers reduce their energy consumption and save money.
BGE customers have saved more than $4.6 billion through the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®, and have reduced their electricity use by 4 billion kilowatt hours since 2008. The savings are equivalent to eliminating more than 2.829 million metric tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, removing 600,553 cars from the road or planting 46.8 million trees.
