Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program completes 10,000 home energy audits, resulting in more than $3 million in savings for customers
BALTIMORE, Aug. 28, 2015–BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® recently completed its 10,000th home energy audit through its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program. Since 2012, BGE has helped residential customers throughout Maryland save more than $3 million on the cost of home energy audits, which help to identify energy leaks and other opportunities for improving efficiency, reducing costs and increasing home comfort.
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR takes a whole-house approach to improving energy efficiency. A participating Home Performance contractor uses advanced diagnostic equipment to identify ways customers can maximize energy efficiency and savings. By making the recommended upgrades, homeowners can reduce their energy use by 10 to 20 percent, enhance indoor air quality and improve their home’s safety, durability and comfort.
BGE residential customers can get a home energy audit, a $400 value, for only $100. They also receive a variety of energy-saving items, such as CFL bulbs, faucet aerators and efficient-flow showerheads, all installed by a participating contractor at no additional cost.
After their audits, homeowners can take advantage of rebates from $200 to $4,300 available to offset the cost of completing qualifying home energy efficiency improvements. Upgrades might include sealing air leaks, duct sealing, adding insulation, upgrading to ENERGY STAR certified lighting and appliances or installing a high-efficiency heating and cooling system.
To date, BGE customers have completed 4,700 home upgrade projects through the BGE’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program.
“In addition to saving money now with rebates on energy-efficient equipment, customers can save all year long through reduced energy use,” says Chris Walls, BGE Residential Energy Efficiency Programs Manager. “It all begins with a comprehensive home energy audit.”
Over the past three years, the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program has provided BGE customers with more than 65,000 CFLs and thousands of showerheads, faucet aerators and other energy-saving items. Plus, customers have received more than $6.7 million in rebates toward energy-efficient upgrades recommended during their home energy audits.

Collectively, the programs help contain the cost of energy and improve reliability. The programs also help to reduce peak demand and slow the growth in energy consumption to lessen the need for more power plants. BGE offers energy-saving solutions for renters, homeowners, large and small business customers, nonprofits and institutional customers. These programs support the EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act.
