Links Mt. Airy and Westminster gas systems ensuring long-term reliable gas supply in Carroll County and surrounding areas
BALTIMORE (March 19, 2014) – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) will begin the installation of a new, underground natural gas main between Mt. Airy and Westminster, allowing for rising demand in the area to be safely and reliably met. This gas main will run approximately 11 miles adjacent to Ridge Road (MD 27). Preliminary work began in February and construction will be completed in sections along or near MD 27 through the fall of 2014.
The pipeline will consist of a 12-inch diameter, coated steel pipe, located primarily within the State Highway Administration road right-of-way. The coated pipe will be placed in an underground trench and then buried and its location will be marked to help protect it from damage due to excavation. During construction, BGE is committed to minimizing the project’s impact on residents and commuters. To reduce impact on traffic, most of the work is expected to be conducted at night along sections of MD 27. All adjacent property owners will be directly notified about the work that will be necessary at their locations and we will work to coordinate operations with residents.
This project will reinforce the existing natural gas systems that currently serve more than 15,000 customers in Carroll County and 38,000 customers in neighboring areas by connecting Mt. Airy and Westminster pipelines and introducing new sources of supply to these areas. It is an intermediary link in the gas system between the mains and services that serve individual customers and larger diameter pipelines that move natural gas across the region. It continues BGE’s effort to ensure the gas delivery system keeps pace with customer demand.
