BALTIMORE (March 18, 2019) – In celebration of Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day, BGE is honoring its employees who work tirelessly, day in and day out, to safely maintain more than 7,500 miles of natural gas pipelines serving the company's 650,000 natural gas customers. Not only do they respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week – many times in challenging conditions - to keep the gas flowing safely for BGE customers, they are also critical to BGE's efforts to modernize our natural gas system.

Last year, BGE safely and reliably met customer demand for natural gas, and crews also responded to the scene of natural gas odor calls in less than an hour 99.97% of the time—a response time that's among the best in the industry.
The hard work of BGE's gas utility workers was also reflected in the J.D. Power 2018 Gas Utility Business Customer Satisfaction Study℠. This year, BGE ranked highest in customer satisfaction with Business Natural Gas Service in the East. BGE ranked highest in the survey's Large Gas Utilities in the East group with a score of 817, more than 36 points above the 14-company average of 781 for gas utility business customers. Companies are ranked on a 1000-point scale.
Modernizing the natural gas delivery system is a core part of BGE's commitment to maintaining safe and reliable service for customers. Part of this work involves replacing cast iron and unprotected steel mains at an accelerated rate under BGE's Strategic Infrastructure Development and Enhancement (STRIDE) gas system modernization plan. To date, through STRIDE, BGE has created approximately 600 new jobs, replaced more than 170 miles of gas mains, and replaced more than 35,000 customer connection lines to the gas system. Once the STRIDE work is completed, it's estimated that greenhouse gas emissions will have been reduced by 210,000 metric tons per year, or the equivalent of taking 44,000 cars off the road.
In addition, employees work each day to patrol and inspect natural gas lines, perform regular maintenance, and install new natural gas infrastructure. The money spent on modernization and maintenance efforts continues to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety for customers.
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel and remains one of the most affordable home-heating fuels. Its popularity continues to grow and over the last five years BGE has added more than 21,000 new customers who now use the company's safe, clean, efficient and affordable natural gas service.
This is the fourth year Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day is being celebrated across the country. This nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work done by the employees of natural gas utilities. BGE joins the American Gas Association and natural gas utility companies across the nation, including Exelon sister utilities PECO and Delmarva Power, in honoring natural gas workers.
