BGE Energizes Electric Substation in Baltimore City to Enhance Service and Reliability for Customers

BALTIMORE (Jan. 14, 2019) – – BGE recently energized a major substation in Baltimore City, part of the company's ongoing commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable service to its customers. The new Camp Small Substation will enhance electric service for nearly 40,000 customers in northwest Baltimore City.

"Modernizing the energy grid is one way we ensure safe and reliable service for our customers. We appreciate the support we received from the City of Baltimore, our customers, and other key stakeholders to bring this reliability project online," said Stephen Woerner, BGE's president & COO. "This substation will allow us to meet future growth in demand for electricity, retire aging equipment, and strengthen our ability to respond to future outages."

Substations transform electricity from higher voltages produced at power plants to the lower voltages used in homes, schools and businesses. The Camp Small Substation will help significantly decrease the risk of localized outages and improve the power quality for customers in the area.

BGE invested approximately $1.1 billion in electric system operations and maintenance and through infrastructure improvements in both 2017 and 2018. In total, the company has invested $8 billion in gas and electric infrastructure since 2002 and will invest $5.3 billion during the next five years. These investments and system enhancements have benefitted customers who have seen system-wide reliability improve by approximately 20 percent since 2010.
