Smart Energy for Economic DevelopmentSM Program Aims to Boost Business Retention and Growth in Central Maryland

BALTIMORE (September 17, 2015) — Qualifying Maryland companies are now eligible to apply for Baltimore Gas and Electric Company’s (BGE) new economic development incentive, the Smart Energy for Economic DevelopmentSM (SEEDSM) Program.

"BGE has been an integral part of the community for nearly 200 years and we understand that a strong economy plays a vital role in our state’s quality of life. The SEEDSM Program shows our commitment and will help to spur business retention and growth, community investment, job creation and economic opportunity," said BGE CEO Calvin Butler, Jr.

New commercial customers and expanding commercial customers that apply and qualify will receive BGE incentives that:

  • Discount charges (demand, distribution and customer) by 25 percent for electric and natural gas service
  • Offer a 75 percent discount on BGE construction costs to extend and expand service to businesses located in a Maryland enterprise zone
  • Eliminate a minimum usage requirement for businesses located in enterprise zones to allow small businesses to take advantage of the program

The SEEDSM Program is a significant enhancement over the previous BGE economic development program offered for the past 20 years. In addition to increasing the amount of discounts and reducing fees, incentives that were limited to electric service only now also apply to natural gas service.

"Businesses that take advantage of the incentive will save money, helping them to succeed and create jobs which will add to the region’s quality of life. We’re excited to spread the word to our existing commercial customers and those businesses that are thinking about locating in BGE’s service area," said Ammanuel Moore, BGE’s economic development manager.
