BGE Recognizes Giving Tuesday by Awarding $25,000 to Support Teachers’ ‘Bright Ideas’

BGE Recognizes Giving Tuesday by Awarding $25,000 to Support Teachers’ ‘Bright Ideas’

BALTIMORE (Nov. 29, 2017) – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE)  yesterday announced 55 recipients of its inaugural Bright Ideas Teachers’ Grants program.

Created to support Kindergarten-12th Grade teachers in securing valuable teaching and learning tools, the grants help to expand innovative ideas for academic enhancement and workforce development in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Teachers throughout BGE’s service area submitted project proposals to receive up to $500 in funding.

“We are honored to support such a robust portfolio of learning opportunities for our young people, specifically for deserving out-of-the-box initiatives which are often just outside of school budgets,” said Valencia McClure, vice president of governmental and external affairs and corporate relations for BGE. “We chose Giving Tuesday to make this announcement to further reinforce BGE’s commitment to employee volunteerism and corporate social responsibility. We expect that this program will continue to grow and benefit our extraordinary teachers and the communities we serve throughout central Maryland.”

The winners were revealed at TouchPoint Baltimore, a neighborhood-based collaboration center where non-profit organizations provide an array of community services. The variety and scope of the proposals allowed all eligible submissions to receive full financial support this year.

In partnership with Exelon shareholders, BGE supports programs that deliver measurable and sustainable impact in the areas of energy efficiency, the environment, education, economic and community development, and emergency response and safety.

During the past five years, BGE has provided approximately $25 million in philanthropic support of communities throughout its service area,  with more than $1 million invested annually in electric and natural gas safety awareness, scholarships, workforce training and youth development.
