BGE Spends $500 Million With Diverse Suppliers in 2021

$37 million increase from 2020 brings total to 44 percent of all purchases, highest in company history

BALTIMORE, MD (June 9, 2022)BGE  purchased $500 million in goods and services from diversity-certified suppliers in 2021, representing 44 percent of the company's total purchases—its highest ever—and a $37 million increase over the amount spent last year. Maryland businesses accounted for $269 million of BGE's diverse spending.

"We've intentionally spent more than $1.4 billion dollars with diverse suppliers and contractors since 2019, because it strengthens our ability to serve our customers while also supporting our community," said BGE CEO and president Carim Khouzami. "This is a win-win that emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion and operational excellence for our customers. Our work is proof that you can expand your supplier sources and deliver stellar results, even during challenging times. I invite other businesses to join us to intentionally invest in businesses owned by people of color, women and veterans as it is one of our greatest opportunities to build equity throughout our service area."

In 2009, BGE voluntarily committed to the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) to award 25 percent of company spending to diverse suppliers. To help meet this goal, BGE created the Focus Forward supplier diversity academy to educate small businesses on how to navigate large business processes and competitively bid for contract opportunities.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a core foundational value for BGE and its parent company, Exelon, both in the workplace and in its engagement with customers and the communities it serves.

Exelon also enables businesses to register with the company and include pertinent information, including their diversity status. To be considered as a supplier, companies can access the SMART by GEP tool via
