BGE Update on August 4 Thunderstorms

Update: August 7, 9 a.m.

BGE has restored approximately 99 percent of customers impacted by the strong storm system in central Maryland on Thursday and Friday nights. We anticipate full restoration by the end of day today, weather depending.  

BGE crews and more than 1,000 mutual assistance personnel are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. Much of this work is extremely labor intensive and time consuming and are likely to restore service to smaller groups of customers at a time – in many cases only a single customer – once completed.

Today, BGE's Mobile Operations Command Center will be stationed at the Baltimore City Public Schools Professional Development Center at 2500 E. Northern Parkway. Customers can visit to learn more about the extent of the reconstruction necessary in their area.

BGE has restored more than 80,000 customers impacted by the strong storms that impacted central Maryland on Thursday and Friday evenings. BGE crews and more than 1,000 mutual assistance personnel are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.  


As of 10:30 p.m., more than 14,000 customers remain without service. Much of this work is extremely labor intensive and time consuming and are likely to restore service to smaller groups of customers at a time – in many cases only a single customer – once completed.  


Starting Saturday, Aug. 6 at 9 a.m., BGE's Mobile Operations Command Center will be stationed at the Baltimore City Public Schools Professional Development Center at 2500 E. Northern Parkway. Customers can visit to learn more about the extent of the reconstruction necessary in their area.

BGE has restored more than 70,000 customers impacted by the unexpectedly strong storms that impacted central Maryland on Thursday evening. BGE has fully mobilized our storm response process and our crews and more than 1,000 mutual assistance personnel are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.  


More than 17,000 customers remain without service, representing over 900 jobs. Much of this work is extremely labor intensive and time consuming and are likely to restore service to smaller groups of customers at a time – in many cases only a single customer – once completed.

  • Charge cell phones and other mobile devices. Consider backup chargers.
  • Have a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home.

Safety Tips: 
  • Always stay away from any storm damaged electrical equipment, especially downed power lines and tree limbs that may come into contact with power lines.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
  • Don't connect your generator directly to your home's wiring. Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Read and adhere to the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation.
  • Customers with special needs, such as those who may be elderly, disabled or dependent on electricity for medical equipment or to refrigerate medication, should have alternate arrangements in place should they experience an extended power outage. 

Update: August 5, noon

The BGE service area experienced widespread system damage from unexpectedly strong storms that impacted central Maryland on Thursday evening. BGE has fully mobilized our storm response process and our crews are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.  

Additionally, we have secured more than 800 mutual assistance personnel who will begin working today. Those crews will be staged out at Lockheed Martin at Martin State Airport and BWI Airport.

As of noon on Friday, Aug. 5, BGE has restored more than 50,000 customers. More than 24,000 customers remain without of service, representing over 900 jobs. Much of this work is extremely labor intensive and time consuming and are likely to restore service to smaller groups of customers at a time – in many cases only a single customer – once completed.

BGE prepared employees, including storm and field personnel, in advance of the storm and has fully mobilized our storm response process. Our crews are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. Additionally,  we have secured more than 800 mutual assistance personnel who will begin working on our system Friday, Aug. 5. 

As of 11:00 p.m., nearly 52,000 customers were out of service representing more than 900 jobs. Much of this work is extremely labor intensive and time consuming, and are likely to restore service to smaller groups of customers at a time – in many cases only a single customer – once completed.
