BGE Urges Customers to Protect Against Utility Imposters

BALTIMORE (June 22, 2015) –BGE customers should be aware of an ongoing phone scam where persons masquerading as BGE employees claim that the customer’ service will be terminated unless they provide payment using a prepaid credit/cash card. This telephone scam is commonly referred to as the “Green Dot” scam, though the criminals now target any prepaid credit/cash card. BGE stresses that legitimate employees will never ask a customer to pay their bill by purchasing a prepaid credit/cash card. Customers should not provide any personal information or purchase the card. Instead, hang up immediately, contact local law enforcement and report the incident to BGE by calling 1-800-685-0123. Customers can also verify if they are speaking to a legitimate employee by calling BGE at 1-800-658-0123.

“The safety of our customers and employees is a top priority,” said Rob Biagiotti, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “BGE employees do contact customers by phone, or may need to enter a home or business to access equipment. However, all BGE employees will have identification that displays their name, photograph and identification number. Call us at 1-800-685-0123 and a representative can verify the employee and the nature of the visit or phone call. Also, please share this information with elderly family members, friends and children.”

As a reminder, BGE does not accept payments in the field and generally only requires entry into a customer’s home in response to gas or electric emergencies, to check BGE equipment, read BGE meters, install new BGE electric and natural gas smart meters, or to start or stop service. Payments can be made by calling the BGE customer contact center at 1-800-685-0123, online at bge.com, by mail and at authorized America’s Cash Express and Global Express locations. Customers can visit our website to learn more about payment options and utility imposters.
