BGE Volunteer Firefighter Receives National Greatest Public Service Award from the Jefferson Awards Foundation

BALTIMORE (June 19, 2015) — Nicholas Weber, a Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) employee and volunteer firefighter, received the “National Greatest Public Service by an Employee” award from the Jefferson Awards Foundation in a Washington D.C. ceremony on Thursday. The Jefferson Awards Foundation is the country’s longest standing organization dedicated to celebrating public service. Weber, an overhead mechanic at BGE, was one of two recipients of the foundation’s employee award.

Weber was nominated for his award by BGE parent company Exelon, a Jefferson Awards Foundation partner organization. Weber received Exelon’s Energy for the Community “Employee Volunteer of the Year” award earlier in June for his work as a line captain with the Aberdeen Volunteer Fire Department. Weber has volunteered with the fire department for 10 years, logging more than 1,000 hours each year.

“We are thrilled that our employee volunteer of the year has also been recognized as one of the top volunteers in the country,” said Calvin Butler, chief executive officer of BGE. “We congratulate Nick on this achievement and thank him for being an ambassador for BGE and Exelon’s commitment to service and community partnerships.”

“The Jefferson Awards Foundation recognizes organizations that constantly inspire and encourage their employees to give back to their local communities,” said Hillary Schafer, Executive Director of the Jefferson Awards Foundation. “Nicholas Weber is a true reflection of the values we look for in our partner organizations, and we are proud to have Exelon as a Jefferson Awards Foundation Champion.”

Exelon’s “Energy for the Community” program provides company support and recognition for employee participation in community projects. In 2014, BGE employees, friends and family donated more than 25,000 volunteer hours to more than 135 different community organizations. Equivalent to 12 years of full-time service, these volunteer efforts offer BGE’s nonprofit partners the opportunity to reinvest resources and better serve communities throughout central Maryland.
