Central Maryland Families and Businesses Continue to Experience Improved Reliability

BGE investments deliver stronger grid an begin to lay the foundation for Maryland's net zero future

BALTIMORE (March 8, 2023) — Ongoing investments in electric infrastructure upgrades, innovative technologies, and the continued dedication of BGE employees combined to ensure quality electric power for customers in 2022. Since 2011, the average length of a service interruption has dropped by 50 minutes (36 percent).

"The investments in our systems have improved day-to-day reliability for the residents and businesses in central Maryland and increased the safety of our grid for our employees and customers," said BGE Chief Operating Officer Derrick Dickens. "Despite the challenges of three major storms in 2022, I'm proud that we delivered reliable and safe electricity to our customers during difficult circumstances. As we continue to face increasing threats from extreme weather and other threats, we are focused on building a resilient system so we can power a cleaner and brighter future."

In 2022, the average number of interruptions experienced by customers (0.74) was the fourth best rate in BGE's history, compared to 2017's all-time low of 0.63. Since 2011, the number of electric outages has decreased 40 percent and outage length has been reduced by 36 percent.

As extreme weather events, electrification and other BGE customer needs increase, the need to invest in reliable infrastructure grows. BGE recently filed a multi-year energy infrastructure plan that outlines grid work required to support the expansion of EVs and other beneficial electrification for BGE customers while maintaining and improving the system to continue the level of reliability customers have come to expect. The plans begin to lay the foundation to support the goals of Maryland's Climate Solutions Now Act, including ensuring that under-resourced communities benefit from the clean energy transition.

BGE invested nearly $1.4 billion in infrastructure improvements and operations and maintenance of the company's electric system in 2022. Since 2014, BGE has invested $15.9 billion in improving and operating and maintaining both the gas and electric systems serving our customers.

The company continues to share best practices and resources with its Exelon sister utilities: Atlantic City Electric, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and Pepco.
