EPA Applauds BGE Customers’ Efforts to Save Energy

11th ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award recognizes BGE customers' efforts to save more than $6 billion in energy and prevent the release of 3.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gases

BALTIMORE (April 14, 2021) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have presented BGE with its ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year— Sustained Excellence Award. This is BGE's 11th ENERGY Star Partner of the Year award, which again recognizes the success of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®, the company's suite of energy efficiency programs that aims to help customers reduce energy usage.

"ENERGY STAR award-winning partners are showing the world that delivering real climate solutions makes good business sense and promotes job growth," said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. "Many of them have been doing it for years, inspiring all of us who are committed to tackling the climate crisis and leading the way to a clean energy economy."

BGE customers are expected to save more than $6 billion as a result of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® and have reduced their electricity use by 5.3 billion kilowatt hours since 2008. The savings are equivalent to eliminating approximately 3.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, removing 805,000 cars from the road for one year, or planting 61 million trees.

The highest honor among ENERGY STAR Awards is the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award. The Sustained Excellence classification recognizes organizations that have received the Partner of the Year award more than three times and continue to surpass previous energy efficiency achievements. Since the inception of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® in 2008, the company's highly successful suite of energy efficiency programs has received a total of fifteen ENERGY STAR awards.

"This award highlights the prudent energy choices our customers are making, and we are pleased to accept this award on their behalf," said Laurie Duhan, manager of energy efficiency portfolio for BGE. "We truly appreciate the way our customers have embraced these programs and are honored to be recognized by the EPA and DOE for the eleventh year in a row for our efforts to provide BGE customers with the ability to manage their energy use more efficiently."

The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® is one of the many ways BGE is moving smart energy forward and features a comprehensive portfolio of energy efficiency programs intended to help customers reduce energy usage and demand in support of EmPOWER Maryland. EmPOWER Maryland programs are funded by a charge on customers' energy bills. EmPOWER programs can help customers reduce their energy consumption and save money.
