BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® recognized for the sixth year in a row for its commitment to helping customers save energy and money
BALTIMORE, (April 19, 2016) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has presented BGE with its ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award. The award recognizes the success of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program, the company’s portfolio of energy efficiency programs, intended to help customers reduce energy usage. BGE, along with sister Exelon utilities ComEd in Chicago, Delmarva Power in Wilmington, Del., PECO in Philadelphia and Pepco in Washington D.C., were honored for their long-term commitment to energy efficiency at the EPA awards ceremony held in Washington, D.C. last week.
“We thank the EPA for recognizing the programs that are giving BGE customers the ability to use energy more efficiently, and we thank our customers for making smart energy choices,” said Calvin G. Butler Jr., chief executive officer of BGE. “We are pleased to accept this award on behalf of our customers and the BGE employees who work tirelessly to design, implement and improve our energy efficiency programs.”
The Sustained Excellence classification recognizes organizations that have received the Partner of the Year award more than three times and continue to surpass previous energy efficiency achievements. Since the inception of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program in 2009, the company’s highly successful suite of energy efficiency programs has received 11 ENERGY STAR awards in total and now receives its sixth Partner of the Year Award.
BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program is one of the many ways BGE is moving smart energy forward and features a comprehensive portfolio of energy efficiency programs, intended to help customers reduce energy usage and demand in support of EmPOWER Maryland. BGE customers will save more than $2.7 billion in customer savings through the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®, and have reduced their electricity use by 2.3 billion kilowatt hours since 2008--enough energy to power more than 194,000 typical U.S. homes for a year.
“By continued collaboration with ENERGY STAR, BGE is helping Americans save money, save energy and do their part to reduce our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions that exacerbate climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “I'm proud to recognize BGE with the highest form of ENERGY STAR recognition as the winner of the 2016 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award.”
Since its inception in 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped prevent a total of more than 2.4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
